Communication is the foundation of human existence. We communicate as individuals, members of societies and organizations. In this era of information driven society, we are exposed to numerous sophisticated, and yet complex, channels of communication. This is parallel with the rapid increase in the world of communication particularly in the use of ICT on a global scale.

Communication Studies offers students both theory and practice in the field of communication which is very much grounded in social sciences. This specialization study offers courses which equip the students with the knowledge and competency in the fields of journalism, public relations, advertising and broadcasting. Hence, we aim to produce graduates who are “critical thinkers”, knowledgeable and have the right skills to meet the demands of the job market.

The graduates of the programme are expected to:

  • Have the expertise in the field of communication, or other related areas of profession.
  • Able to apply the knowledge and skills to plan and execute effective, innovative, practical, professional and ethical communication programmes and strategies.

Industrial Relations and Labour Studies Programme enables the students to engage in the practice of professionalism in accordance with the ethical and moral values relevant to the industrial world. Demonstrate effective communication, leadership and teamwork skills in the context of industrial and employment relations as well as apply skills and abilities in industrial and employment relations for life-long learning. Practicing the laws related to industrial and employment relations.

The courses offered in this programme are aimed at fulfilling eight learning outcomes:

  • Interpret an understanding from the sources of knowledge and able to synthesize these knowledge for self-development as well as for the society.
  • Utilize their respective intellectual skills to conceptualize the understanding and explanation of the actors in industrial relations and discourse in the form of presentation and the proliferation of knowledge.
  • Communicate with all levels of the organization and put forward their ideas in various forums and environment with a high level of professionalism.

UG Programme 4

International Studies introduces students to the formation of international system and relations between modern states since the Westphalia Agreement in 1648 through historical and theoretical frameworks. At the same time, this program examines the international system in the contemporary context that is increasingly complex with the emerging of actors and new challenges. As such, this program gives focuses on issues related to international laws, global economy, modern diplomacy, negotiation and conflict resolution, foreign policy, security and defence, and other contemporary issues. As a whole, this program, prepares students with theoretical and practical knowledge that need to be mastered by international relations’ practitioners like diplomats and international trade delegates.

Politics and Government Programme offers a holistic and practical approach to the study of political science. As political science is very broad in nature, this programme offers courses which expose students to a variety of sub-fields in political science. These sub-fields include political economy, public policies, Malaysian politics, comparative politics and governance.

The Development Planning and Management Program is designed to equip students with the principles, practices and techniques towards achieving the goals of sustainable development. This program adopts a multidisciplinary approach which exposes students to the studies of economy, sociology and physical environment. The significant aspects in the curriculum include exposing students through various tools and technologies in development planning and management activities. These are fundamental dimensions to develop students to be critical in analyzing and offering solutions for the betterment of the society.

Professional social work practice in Malaysia is becoming much more relevant in the last few decades because of rapid urbanization, changes in family structures, diminishing traditional support network and the increasing number of social problems. The main purpose of social work is about the enhancement of human well being and the promotion of social justice and social development. The courses offered by this programme are intended to prepare and equip the students with knowledge on the interaction between human and society, Students learn theories and skills in social work to enable them to play their roles effectively in helping or working with individuals, groups and communities as well as formulating social policies. This programme is broad-based, drawing on knowledge from other social science disciplines and behavioural sciences, such as planning, management, and both communication and interpersonal skills.
